Why Is The Philippines Poor?

Dear Friends,

Here is a good article sent by Dr. Arsenio Martin of Fort Arthur , Texas ..
Enjoy reading.

THE DIFFERENCE

The difference between the poor countries and the rich ones is not the age of the country:

This can be shown by countries like India & Egypt , that are more than 2000 years old, but are poor.

On the other hand, Canada , Australia & New Zealand , that 150 years ago were inexpressive, today are developed countries, and are rich.

The difference between poor & rich countries does not reside in the available natural resources.

Japan has a limited territory, 80% mountainous, inadequate for agriculture & cattle raising, but it is the second world economy. The country is like an immense floating factory, importing raw materials from the whole world and exporting manufactured products.

Another example is Switzerland, which does not plant cocoa but has the best chocolate in the world. In its little territory they raise animals and plant the soil during 4 months per year. Not enough, they produce dairy products of the best quality! It is a small country that transmits an image of security, order & labor, which made it the world's strongest, safest place.

Executives from rich countries who communicate with their counterparts in poor countries show that there is no significant intellectual difference.

Race or skin color are also not important: immigrants labeled lazy in their countries of origin are the productive power in rich European countries.

What is the difference then? The difference is the attitude of the people, framed along the years by the education & the culture & flawed tradition.

On analyzing the behavior of the people in rich & developed countries, we find that the great majority follow the following principles in their lives:

1. Ethics, as a basic principle.
2. Integrity.
3. Responsibility.
4. Respect to the laws & rules.
5. Respect to the rights of other citizens.
6. Work loving.
7. Strive for savings & investment.
8. Will of super action.
9. Punctuality.
10. and of course...Discipline

In poor countries, only a minority follow these basic principles in their daily life.

The Philippines is not poor because we lack natural resources or because nature was cruel to us. In fact, we are supposedly rich in natural resources.

We are poor because we lack the correct attitude. We lack the will to comply with and teach these functional principles of rich & developed societies.

If you do not forward this message nothing will happen to you. Your pet will not die, you will not be fired, you will not have bad luck for seven years, and also, you will not get sick or go hungry.

But those may happen because of your lack of discipline & laziness

,

your love for intrigue and politics, your indifference to saving for the future, your stubborn attitude.

If you love your country, let this message circulate so that many Filipinos could reflect about this, & CHANGE, ACT!

i dont think we are poor. poor is just a word created by humans. Take a look at the hearts of the Filipino people. They may have the best economy like Japan but people there as old as 80yrs old are still working?! And you call them rich? they don't even have any young generations! schools there are closing because of lack of students, and is that what you call rich?

I hate it when white people calls us lazy, are we? we still do the mano2x things and now we are called lazy?! we still sing lullaby rather than paying someone just to take care of our own children.. and now they call us lazy! just look who's talking? people who depends on machine and other people to survive are the ones who are LAZY!

and in terms of discipline, have you heard of Columbine High School massacre? is that what you call discipline?!

My eyes were wide open when I read this article however na spoiled lang when i reached from the line that says, "If you do not forward..." and below.

Sorry ha but I hate those lines jud.

Anyway, I disagree that Philippines is poor. Economically we may be poor but on other points we are very rich. One of the point is what Mr. Keithics pointed.

The reason why we are economically poor is not because Filipinos are lazy or Filipinos lack those attitudes you mentioned above but because of corruption.

I don't won't elaborate coz I hate politics.

Don't you know that Filipinos are brilliant compared to other races? According to my cousin who is now working abroad, her american workmates are all big talks but with less output. Her boss relies more on Filipinos compared to his own race.

hi mayan,

it's a very nice article that you posted... try reading "Why we are poor" by Sionil F. Jose - definitely a nice read!

and i enjoy reading the replies of keith and allan on this matter, both have good points....

you know, keith is right on pointing out that we are not lazy on those situations that he is cited and that yes, allan i agree with you that corruption has definitely hamper our economic growth BUT i disagree with both of you when you said that we are not poor.

WE ARE!

the most obvious evidence of this is the long line of people trying their luck to win in lotto and those people in wowowee and eat bulaga... people are getting more and more desperate coz of poverty.

unemployment rates have soared for the past years and a whole lot more underemployed graduates who are working in establishments that are far from their degree. and the brain drain situation in the country has increased with majority of the Filipinos now leaving the country just to work abroad with teachers becoming caregivers (no intention to demean them).

and we seem to overlook the educational crisis that we're having. we are producing graduates who are learning less and less and has lost that competitive quality. and a more depressing reality is that some teachers are not even that qualified to teach.

politically? politics is always trash, gone were the days of good governance. corruption is always there even during the time of Jesus... and it's not even just on the high scale but it starts on the lowest level.

i believe that the reason why we are poor is because of our attitude. yes, most of us are working our ass off but there are more people who have this attitude of simply depending their lives on the government. there are those people who just simply complain yet never do anything to help themselves.

if people just don't get tempted to get the pay-off money during elections then maybe in a small way, there would be a difference.

yes, we are poor but that does not mean that we should stop there and sulk ourselves with this fact. we need to help ourselves.

As I mentioned in my previous post, we are economically poor but on some other matters we are rich.

Nice, you can't blame people depending on government. I hate to admit but they are always involved in our daily lives.

Example, if that 12% tax will be lowered or eliminated, we can save a lot. Anything we buy or pay there's always a tax. You need to add 120 for every 1000 you pay. Tax is really a pain of the ass and we got nothing in return. It all goes to their pockets.

What I'm trying to say is that, the government does not need to feed or give jobs to people. They should lower the taxes, invite more investors for more jobs, and support the brilliant minds of the Filipinos.

I agree that some teachers aren't equipped to teach quality education to students. There's a lot of them from where I came from.
